From Goldfish to Golden Retrievers
It’s a sad fact that we don’t always remember what we focus on when learning a foreign language. Despite our best intentions, sometimes new sounds, new words, new grammar – it all just goes in one ear and out of the other. We want to be like golden retrievers – able to retrieve the right thing to say at the right moment, but sometimes we’re more like goldfish, swimming endlessly around the bowl desperately trying to hold on to the pronunciation of the two different /h/ sounds in Arabic. This is why at Sharek we place a huge amount of emphasis on retriveal activities. By this we mean activities which challenge the learners to go back to what they’ve learnt, and recycle and reuse it. Anyone who’s ever learnt a language will know that the old adage is true – if you don’t use it, you lose it! Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be sharing our top retrieval activities but before that please tell us what you do. Share a comment below about your favourite ‘Golden retriever’ activities for language learning.
I used to write entries with the new words I’d learnt in a language learning site. I got corrections for my writings.
